Abbasid Kufic Script

From the viewpoint of scholars delving into the historical aspects of Arabic calligraphy, it becomes apparent that Arabic script originated from Nabataean and was initially used as a basic and unrefined script called “Hijazi” about 300 years before Islam. After Islam, until the second century of the Islamic calendar, it was the prevalent and conventional writing style for transcribing and recording verses of revelation. Skilled Arabs, such as Ali ibn Abi Talib, Zaid ibn Thabit, and Uthman, wrote using this script in the first century of Islam.

After the Islamic conquests, the culture and art of newly Muslim empires flourished. The initial Hijazi Arabic script, used in the late second century and during the Abbasid Caliphate, transformed into a beautiful and rhythmic script known as Kufic Abbasid. Islamic calligraphy emerged, not only tasked with preserving and recording divine verses but also serving as a means to promote and propagate the new religion through the beauty and attractiveness of writing the Muslim holy book.

The period of growth and excellence of Kufic Abbasid continued as the sole artistic method of writing for two centuries until, in the fourth century, new scripts emerged based on Kufic Abbasid designs. Gradually, these gave way to new styles and pens. The books and volumes written in Kufic Abbasid gained significance not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for the visual values of this script. It´s simple, spacious, and uncluttered appearance held a sacred and spiritually valuable aspect for their owners, turning each page into a crafted piece of art. Due to this, it was often used for writing multi-page sections or chapters. The expansion of Islamic territories and the growing Muslim population favored more compact, less voluminous, and cost-effective scripts. Despite its greater beauty and allure, Kufic Abbasid gradually declined and faded into obscurity.

It means that Kufic script samples written in the Abbasid style have a history of over a thousand years. Often preserved in unfavorable conditions within hidden corners of mosques, tombs, and places of worship, these artifacts have endured challenges such as adverse temperatures, humidity, fire, insect damage, and more. Over time, many of these works have been lost, leaving only a few incomplete and fragmented pages from books and collections. Only in the past century, with renewed global interest, have scholars, cultural experts, and international academies been captivated by these artifacts, leading to their collection, restoration, and dissemination.

One of the most beautiful, rarest, and expensive Abbasid Kufic manuscripts is the unique “Blue Quran,” likely dating back to the Abbasid Caliphate in the 4th century. It was meticulously written in gold on blue leather, possibly commissioned for a prominent caliph or dignitary. Only a few remaining pages are preserved, housed in Tunisia and museums worldwide. Inspired by the “Blue Quran,” our sample is meticulously crafted on exquisite blue leather, featuring the Kufic Abbasid script elegantly in golden hues. What sets ours apart is the distinctive relief technique applied to the leather.

Leather adopts a deep blue hue, evoking serenity, stability, inspiration, knowledge, power, and wisdom. This calming shade extends its symbolism to the vastness of the universe. In contrast, the entire calligraphy text is adorned in Gold, representing not only the core of the Earth but also encapsulating the essence of the heart, love, and blood. This regal color serves as a symbol of divine consciousness, enlightenment, and prosperity, resonating with notions of divine perfection and nobility. Within Islamic culture, gold holds a significant position as one of the primary colors symbolizing paradise and heaven.

Our blue leather-bound Quran is arranged based on the most beautiful and principled methods of Abbasid Kufic script from the 4th century. It adheres to the horizontal orientation, the golden ratio, and meticulous margin conventions typical of Abbasid Kufic. Inspired by the renowned beauty of the unique “Blue Quran,” our Quran has been recreated with the same color and composition for the first time.

It is worth noting that a complete Quran, meticulously written in authentic Abbasid script, following the horizontal orientation, margin conventions, and page layout principles of the 4th century, is a rarity among ancient manuscripts and later transcriptions. The compilation, arrangement, and printing of this precise complete Quran in 810 pages, inspired by the rare “Blue Quran” and additionally printed in relief and with complete Arabization (diacritical marks including small symbols like red and green dots), could be considered a unique and unprecedented achievement worldwide after the 4th century AH.
